Right Now, I'm Alright

It’s the good old days - my good old days. I picked up on the fact a while ago: I’m happy, and have been for some time.

See, I think that happiness is better defined as a state without negativity; a state where you mind doesn’t drag you down. You’ve stopped polluting your mind, you’re not encumbered with unnecessary things like negativity and desire.

Desire can be absolutely fine, but it’s important to make a distinction. Growth-oriented, positive-sum desire, desire that works for you and can work for others - that’s great. Keep that. What you don’t want is compulsive, ego-driven desire - the kind that’ll never be satisfied. It sticks in your mind negatively.

Another part of being happy was getting my average week closer to the one I want, instead of moving further away. That might seem obvious and even trite - but it’s overwhelmingly easy to let it drift away.

If you think about what might skew your week one way, your screen time, your relationships, your job, your sleep, your diet, your image of self. They all shape your mind. Activity shapes your body. Your body and mind shape who you are. Who you are shapes what you want.

What you want shapes your week.

Like your attitude, this is all under your control. It’s not easy and there are decisions that look simple, but seldom are.

  • Are you prepared to read instead of scroll?
  • Will you give yourself time to think?
  • Are you going to take a walk and get some calories burned?
  • Will you go for that run or lift those weights or cook that healthy meal and lose that belly?

How will you fill your week?

When you pick your next job, are you chasing a title, money and status? Money matters. Beer tokens are great - but to a point. After that, it just solves your money problems.

Status is cool - but do you care? Do you want to be the man, or experience the journey to being the man? If you’re working a job you hate in a field that you have no interest in where you have little time for yourself or others, how much does somebody need to pay you?

Will that pull you closer to your ideal week? Chefs, software developers, streamers - those that create - are generally fulfilled. Those people can survive, and survive pretty happily, by doing what they love.

Are you?

These are my good old days. My Wife is a huge part of that, and it would be a crime not to thank her - she really is the best. I have goals - they’re in place for the journey and the growth. I’m working towards them. My job is great and I wake up happy every day. Tired, but happy.
